Proud to support Maggie’s Swansea for second year in succession

We are delighted to announce that we will support Maggie's Swansea as our official staff charity for the second year running, following a ballot by the our staff in January.

Last year, we raised an impressive sum of money for Maggie's Swansea through a range of fundraising activities, including dress-down days, providing refreshments to customers, raffling an Easter hamper, a sponsored dog walk, open water swimming, and taking part in the Swansea Half Marathon. 

The total raised during 2022 was £18,910, helping the charity to continue to deliver its vital services. This year, we hope to surpass last year's total and make an even bigger difference to the lives of those affected by cancer. So far, our staff have arranged events including a raffle and cake sale and will again take part in a sponsored dog walk and the Swansea Half Marathon. There are also plans to introduce a fundraising golf day. 

Located at Singleton Hospital, Maggie's Swansea provides free practical, emotional, and social support to people with cancer, as well as their families and friends. The centre works in collaboration with conventional cancer therapies, offering a caring environment to provide support, information, and practical advice. This includes financial and benefits advice, support with treatment decisions, and access to other cancer services. In addition, Maggie's Swansea also provides nutrition workshops, complementary therapies, and other services. 

As a charity, Maggie's relies on donations to continue its important work, and Swansea Building Society is proud to have contributed to the charity multiple times over recent years.

In addition to our support for Maggie's Swansea, we are celebrating our 100th anniversary this year with many additional community and fundraising initiatives.

The largest of the our centenary initiatives will see us donate £100,000 to local charities. The majority of the funds (£85,000) will be divided between three main charitable causes, with a further £15,000 remaining for our Swansea, Carmarthen, and Cowbridge branches to donate to charities related directly to their local communities.

Other Society initiatives during 2023 include: 100 days of volunteering, where the Society will encourage our staff to volunteer on local projects; and 100 trees planted, where we planted trees at Penllergare Valley Woods.
