Swansea Building Society sponsors Swansea RFC for the 2024/25 season
September 9, 2024
We are delighted to announce the renewal of our sponsorship with local rugby union team Swansea RFC, known as ‘The Whites,’ for the 2024/25 season. This continued support underscores our deep commitment to local sports, the community, and charitable organisations.
Swansea ‘Whites’ has been a cornerstone of Welsh rugby since its founding in 1872, originally as a football club before switching to rugby in 1874. In 1881, Swansea RFC became one of the founding clubs of the Welsh Rugby Union and has since claimed four Welsh Premier Division Championships.
Over the years, Swansea RFC has achieved historic feats, including an unmatched 22-month unbeaten run during its early years and a monumental victory over the New Zealand All Blacks in 1935, becoming the first rugby union club to defeat the world-renowned team with an 11-3 scoreline.
The 1990s brought further glory to the club, notably when Swansea RFC triumphed over the reigning world champions, Australia, with a 21-6 victory on home soil. The team's home ground, St. Helen's, which offers stunning views of Swansea Bay, has been its base since 1876 and was the venue for the first-ever Welsh rugby international home match in 1882.
Swansea RFC's storied history is highlighted by a distinguished roster of players, including Gavin Henson, Dan Biggar, Mark Wyatt, Ryan Jones, and the legendary Alun Wyn Jones, all of whom represented Wales, with Alun Wyn Jones captaining the British and Irish Lions.
Our Society’s renewed sponsorship reflects our ongoing dedication to supporting the South Wales community. In 2024, we continue to see strong performance across all key areas, building on our successful track record in recent years. This year, we remain committed to further community involvement through charitable initiatives and local sponsorships, reinforcing our long-standing support of the region.
David Blyth, Board Member, Swansea RFC, commented:
“We are excited to renew our partnership with Swansea Building Society for the 2024/25 season. Their consistent support reflects their genuine dedication to the local community, and it’s something we greatly appreciate. As we look to the future, we’re confident that our continued collaboration will inspire success both on and off the field.”
Alun Williams, our Chief Executive Officer, said:
“Swansea Building Society is delighted to once again support Swansea RFC, a club that shares our commitment to the community and the values that have been at the core of our business for over a century. Swansea RFC’s rich heritage and close connection to the local area mirrors our own, and we wish the team every success for the upcoming season.”
