Proud to appoint Nathan Griffiths as our Deputy Chief Executive

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Nathan Griffiths as our new Deputy Chief Executive, working alongside Chief Executive Alun Williams as part of the Society’s long-term succession planning and leadership development strategy.

Nathan joined Swansea Building Society in July 2019 as Finance Director and has played an important role in supporting our continued growth and development. His appointment recognises his contribution to the Society and reflects a considered approach to developing our future leadership capability.

A Chartered Accountant and Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Nathan brings extensive experience of the financial services sector, having worked with retail banks, building societies and challenger banks throughout his career.

He began his career in Deloitte’s Financial Services Assurance and Advisory practice, where he spent eight years specialising in the banking and building society sector. During this time, he progressed to Senior Manager, advising on financial reporting, prudential regulation, governance and strategic development.

In 2015, Nathan joined Monmouthshire Building Society as Group Financial Controller, subsequently taking on broader leadership responsibilities, including supporting the Chief Executive and leading the Society’s products function, before joining our Society four years later.

Since his appointment as Finance Director, Nathan has held executive responsibility across Finance, Treasury, IT and HR. He has also worked closely with the Board, and senior leadership team on our Society’s long-term strategy and a range of strategic, commercial and organisational initiatives.

Alongside his executive responsibilities, Nathan chairs our Assets and Liabilities Committee and is a member of the Credit Risk Management and IT Committees. He also represents our Society within the wider building society sector and South Wales business community.

As part of our structured leadership development programme, Nathan has recently completed the Henley Business School Leadership Programme, further broadening his leadership experience and supporting his progression into wider executive responsibilities.

Alun Williams, our Chief Executive, said:

“Succession planning is something we have given considerable thought and attention to as a Society. It is important that we continue to develop our leadership team and ensure we have the experience, skills and capabilities in place to support the Society’s long-term future.

“Nathan has made a significant contribution since joining us in 2019. His knowledge of the building society sector, his understanding of our business and his involvement in shaping our strategy make him a strong choice for this appointment. He has demonstrated a real commitment to the Society and its members, and this is a natural next step in his development as a senior leader.”

Nathan Griffiths, our Deputy Chief Executive, said:

“I am incredibly proud to take on the role of Deputy Chief Executive. Swansea Building Society is an organisation I care deeply about, and since joining in 2019 I have been fortunate to work with a fantastic team and play a part in its continued growth and development.

“We have achieved a great deal, but there is also a huge amount of opportunity ahead of us. What is important to me is that as we continue to grow and evolve, we retain the values, relationships and focus on our members that make the Society what it is.

“I am really looking forward to working alongside Alun, the Board and colleagues across the Society as we build on what we have achieved and take the business forward.”

The appointment forms part of our ongoing commitment to strong leadership and long-term succession planning as we continue to pursue sustainable growth while serving our members and communities across Wales.

Following Nathan’s appointment, we will begin the recruitment process for a new Finance Director to join our senior leadership team. Further details about the role and recruitment process will be announced separately.
