Mortgage Regulation

In December 2001 the Treasury first announced that mortgage lending and administration would become regulated activities. The focus was on improving information for customers to help them make better informed decisions.

In line with the regulation of general insurance intermediaries, HM Treasury took the decision to widen the Financial Services Authority's remit to include mortgage advising, for a streamlined approach to regulation.

The important dates to remember are:

  • 31 October 2004 - Regulation of mortgage lending, sales and administration and also long-term care insurance started.
  • 14 January 2005 - Regulation of general insurance sales and administration including protection products started.

  • The Society's permitted business is arranging, providing and administering mortgages. You can check this on the FSA register by visiting the FSA's website on www.fsa.gov.uk/register or by contacting the FSA on 0845 606 1234.
